Nhlengethwa has developed a distinctive collage and paint practice over the years. His series of tributes to his contemporaries as well as many masters in the arts, and his love for jazz have become a strong thematic thread in his work.
His upcoming exhibition will incorporate a procession of models dressed in garments by the renowned designer of the first Madiba shirt, Sonwabile Ndamase. The models will all be people with albinism. His aim is to remind everyone that those with albinism are part of us. Some of his questions are around what we are doing to make them feel like they are part of our society.
“The theme, Art meets Fashion, is born out of the golden thread of art that permeates the fashion world. I believe that clothing designs and other fashion accessories are inspired by art – whether in colour or style. My interest in this dates back to my teens. I have always been fascinated by people looking trendy. I love shopping around for exclusive pieces of clothing for myself and my family. In this series, I reflected on models in dressing rooms and on the ramp. I always like to see women with Afro hairstyles, head scarves, berets and hats.”
It is no surprise that fashion is a key focus in the artist’s creative output. Anyone who knows the couple can vouch that Sam and Maureen are a perfect example of contemporary stylishness.
The exhibition opens at the Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg on 2 December 2023 and runs through to 20 January 2024.
